VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT: HOLLY DELAUNAY
Anna Jeno and Ann Pedersen
OPB Volunteer Times
Winter, 2002

Although she is not sure who recommended her
for her position, Holly DeLaunay very much enjoys being on
the Council.
Originally
from Spokane, Holly feels she is a native after so many years
in Portland—“I’m used to the rain and I have quite a few umbrellas.”
Holly
started volunteering for OPB in September 1992. She learned
about from her husband, Jerry DeLaunay, whom she met when
they were both riding the same bus to work. Jerry is the Program
Director for Golden Hours.
Currently
Holly serves as board operator at Golden Hours, and introduces
each segment when she is volunteering.
She
also volunteers for Omni Media Networks, a nonprofit organization
that provides educational and entertainment for disabled persons.
She provides content for them by announcing Country Music
in sixhour blocks which is prepared for streaming audio. Visit
the web site for more information at www.onmimedianetworks.org.
She
listens to Golden Hours during her workday at the US Department
of Agriculture’s Rural Development section. This program assists
in providing housing for low income people in rural areas
throughout the State of Oregon. In fact, Holly was instrumental
in helping OPB get small grants for OPB to produce documentaries
on rural farm conditions.
When
she is not working for USDA or OPB, she likes to spend time
with her husband, take walks with her guide dog, Jaeger, and
listen to her favorite program, “Wait! Wait! Don’t tell me!”
As
part of her commitment to OPB and to Golden Hours, Holly assists
in interviewing potential volunteers for Golden Hours. “When
people come to Golden Hours, we tell them we are informal
and hope they like dogs. We have guides and service animals
that spend a lot of time here. We like to give people choices
in what they do here because we want them to come back and
volunteer here for a long time.”
